15th January 2010 – a return to Cambridge Folk Club

Two full spots in one week, fantastic fun! As at St Neots on the previous Tuesday, we were invited to headline for the evening at Cambridge Folk Club. Cambridge FC has always been incredibly welcoming and supportive of what we do, and so it is always a real pleasure to return.

We travelled with friends and family who, over and above having an enjoyable evening, were tasked with making use of a new Christmas present – a new digital video camera – to record us in action. (A bit like playing back and critically reviewing and reflecting on sound recordings, it is excellent to get the chance to look at yourselves and think a bit more about body language and introductions to songs etcetera.)

Despite roads and traffic jams trying to slow us down, we arrived in reasonable time for a sound check. Howard Roscoe and Laura Cherry kindly provided the support for the evening and did a lovely job – very nice guitar work, lovely vocals and some good songs.

We stuck to the same repertoire as we used for St Neots and felt very much at home amongst friends as soon as we went up on stage. There was a really good reaction to our music and, it was nice, even after playing at Cambridge several times, that there were some club members there who hadn’t seen us before and who subsequently fed back to us how much they had enjoyed what we had done. We were similarly very pleased by the number of people who bought CDs of our music – not for the proceeds but for its expression of the level of enjoyment they were taking from our music.

It is amazing how fast two time 45 minutes can fly when you are enjoying yourself. We finished with a rendition of our song Nellie Torrence and Jeannie Waldie and were very content to respond to the loud calls for an encore – it is as satisfying as it is an honour to be asked. We had a lot of really excellent feedback from a wide range of people as we were packing up which buoyed us up enormously for the journey home.

A very dear friend of Rob’s who lives in Cambridge but is just about to take a job in New Zealand also turned up with friends to see us – so, it was an emotional departure from the Golden Hind. All best wishes Clive. It was great to see you before you go, thanks for your support both on the night and, indeed, over all the time we have been playing! Keep in touch.

Having now had chance to watch the film taken on the evening, our film-makers have done a great job - thanks Dan and Holly! Once Rob and I have had chance to review it all, we’ll get it up on the web-site and elsewhere for others to view.
